A message from our friends at United Neighbors
7/2/26
Hi All,
We want to extend good wishes for a safe and fun 4th of July. We appreciate all of your support as we fight bad housing policy. We see more and more of you organizing to stop egregious developments in your communities. The best way to fight bad housing developments is by fighting bad housing policy at its source.
The State legislature is now on summer break which means our representatives are home and this is the time we must engage with them on legislation we find harmful to our communities. All the bills, we opposed and sent letters opposing, have passed their committee hearings. They have taken on amendments and some have seen some significant opposition. They will all probably get through the Appropriations Committee and then head for full floor votes. As we stated before, many of our legislators have not even seen the bills yet. We need to engage with them so they know how much we oppose the bills. The more opposition, the more chance we have of them voting no or registering no vote.
Next week we will circulate a “click and send” letter to our LA Delegation, with a quick explanation of why we oppose a few bills. Once again we need a great turn out so we make an impact. The political landscape is such that fighting for common sense housing policy is not getting the support it should have and the more progressive our legislators are, the more density and height they will support in our neighborhoods. They have bought into the narrative that there is a housing crisis and building more everywhere is the answer. So far the last five years of their housing policies have not made anything more affordable- which is the crisis we face. It is not supply but the right supply that we lack.
Again, we will keep you informed. Thank you for working with us. Happy 4th of July.
Best,
Maria, Cindy, Jeff, Marc
