Hello to the friends and patrons of Collage,

Last Sunday we had a spectacular sold-out show with Arvin and Alice Wallace, and we have many new subscribers from that and other recent events. Welcome to all of you, and to the many others who joined recently. We hope you investigate some artists who may be new to you and will stop in for another show soon.

As Collage draws close to our five-year anniversary of post-pandemic operations, we’re thankful for all the help you’ve given us along the way. We’re also doubly committed to bringing you more great concerts and jam sessions, more music lessons, and getting more instruments into hands eager to play them. These are difficult times for arts organizations, but with your help we expect to thrive despite it all.

And now to our schedule… Tomorrow night June 20th we welcome an interesting pairing: classically trained vocalist Asya Gorska and flamboyant rock guitarist Eugene Vega. Both are from Ukraine, united in a love of rock and jazz standards, and they’ll be mixing it up on this lively evening. Last week we included a clip of a blues number, this week they show that they can rock too:

This duo is versatile and powerful – reserve now to see them live! As of Thursday night, there are only eleven seats available.
Sunday, June 21st is International Make Music Day, and to honor the occasion Taeri and Katie will be extending our monthly Ukulele Jam. The ukes will begin at 2 PM as usual, but from 4 until 7 PM all instruments and genres are welcome! It will be a freewheeling set with whatever music you all want to play, so come join the fun!
June 24th is our next Acoustic Roots Session with Rebecca Lynn, a chance to play and sing classic folk music, blues, country, or whatever Americana you love. Rebecca will have her guitar and fiddle, and other musicians are invited to bring their instruments, voices, and appreciation for sonic traditions. It’s free, as always!
On Friday, June 26th we host our first video program in some time, and it’s one that is highly relevant to our community. Concrete Law chronicles the battle to save Channel Street Skatepark, and it’s the story of how a band of local activists scored an unlikely victory despite bureaucratic roadblocks. This showing will feature a Q&A with Director April Jones, as well as a show and auction of her canvas works to support her attendance at an international filmmakers conference in Portugal. Come learn about this history and how it was documented at this insightful program.
On Saturday the 27th we welcome New Orleans-based Mia Borders and her band will present a night of NOLA soul. This quartet merges R&B, soul, jazz, blues, and funk, with guitarist and vocalist Mia belting out thoughtful, passionate music – check out her sultry vocals and the band’s interplay on this recording from last month’s Jazzfest in New Orleans:

Ready for a whole  evening of that talent and soul? You know what to do.
We’re taking the Fourth of July weekend off, but the Actor’s Directors Jungle Workshops will be back on the 6th to start shaping their next production. Their recent show had many moments of drama and hilarity, and if you’d like to be part of the next one, now is the time to get in on the ground floor.
Our Sea Shanty Sings continue on July 8th under the guidance of Chris Halstead and Steve Saunders. These nautical work songs have diverse themes from celebrating life at sea to complaining about shipboard food to whimsical tall tales, and they haven’t lost their charm. Come sing with us and keep the tradition alive – it’s free, but you can RSVP to get a list of some songs that will be sung that evening
The LPS Poetry Open Mic is early this time, on July 9th, so if you have been marking the third Thursday of the month be sure to revise your calendar. As always Joseph Paulson will conduct this evening in which you are invited to read your own work or a favorite piece by someone else. There are always surprises and moments of wonder – come enjoy the magic of artful language, and share the insights in your own compositions.
On July 10th a vocalist who was here for a duo show returns with a full band and a more ambitious repertoire. Iryna Reznytska was here in March for a set with Will Collyer, and this time she will front a four piece jazz group and will perform a mix of new and old tunes, improvisations, and Ukrainian songs reimagined through a jazz lens. This is the debut show for the group, so we have no video to share, but we’re sure our adventurous jazz fans will want to be there.
Last week we promised news about music lessons, and those are restarting soon. First up is the second session of Finding Your Voice, for intermediate singers who are interested in learning more about expressive singing, vocal control, and harmonizing with others. That will start on July 11th at 10 AM and run for six weeks. The whole series is $60, and individual lessons are $15.
We are also pleased to offer a one-afternoon workshop on improvisation that will be taught by three masters of the form. Whatever instrument you play, this will be useful because it will change the way you think about reacting to what other musicians are doing. This session is open to intermediate players but will be useful to more advanced ones as well, and is limited to twelve participants. See the ticketing link for details.

The “When There Is Peace on Earth” art show attracted much interest, and we thank Curator Nadiya Nikolayeva for her dedication and expertise. A new show will be opening soon featuring the music photography of Dani Crum in venues in four American cities. We’ll have more information and news about the artist reception in the next edition of this newsletter.

We just added a lot more programs to our website, including a tango-inflected duo from Chicago, a collaboration between a Swedish multi-instrumentalist and an LA experimentalist, and a new band that blends Eastern European music into jazz. Other upcoming shows include an afternoon of Big Band music, country rock with a fiddle at the forefront, and the return of the South Bay Guitar Quartet. More shows will be announced soon! Learn more about upcoming events on our website and in future editions of this newsletter.

And a plea – we still have a backlog of requests for band instruments, and need your help. Do you have a trumpet, trombone, clarinet, or sax in a closet somewhere, or know someone who might? We can also use an accordion and guitarron – many schools have Mexican music programs and need instruments. Please consider donating so we can keep helping – we offer a tax receipt and admission to any show as thanks. Please send an email to richard@collageartculture.org for more information.

That’s it for this week, and we look forward to seeing you at Collage soon. Keep supporting the arts and have a great time doing it!
