President’s Corner 5/20/2025

Greetings Neighbors:

Memorial Day stands as one of our nation’s most sacred observances; a time to remember the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of the freedoms we hold dear.  It is not only a day on our calendar, but a solemn moment of national reflection, pride and most of all gratitude.

As we bow our heads in remembrance, we also lift our hearts for the valiant efforts in gratitude for those who now serve and have served ALL military services, but this weekend the United States Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard and Merchant Marines.  Here in San Pedro, we are celebrating Southern California’s Largest Memorial Day events May 21 – 26.  LA Fleet Week is an annual multi-day celebration of our nation’s Sea Services.

The most recent SSCA membership drive “Walk Around” by our volunteer neighbors was well received.  It was suggested that going forward, this effort must be conducted earlier in the year with revising the annual Viewpoint.

As our national and local leaders struggle with various budget issues, so too does your SSCA; hence the need for a growing membership. Our largest expense is the September, Annual Members Only Social; accounting for almost 45% of our income and expense.  Although this activity is for “Members Only” is it a justified and responsible event.  Remember, your SSCA is a non -profit, therefore, requires very little in the way of operating income, all income is put back into South Shore events.  Going forward, this item is subject to continuous review.

In other news, the Ocean View Plaza budget has been established, with low maintenance architecture.  We are told that the Starbucks project is slated for late 2027 or early 2028.  As a caveat, your SSCA did not support this project, but maintained a neutral position while totally opposed various alternatives.  None of which would have been adding to the South Shores economy, beauty and neighborhood environment.

CERT training is scheduled to start 09.16 thru 10.28, at LAPD Harbor Division.  On the calendar as of today, is the National Night Out scheduled for August 5th.  The fourth of July block party is on temporary HOLD, until such time we can muster volunteers to spear-head this event.  Please email, if you have interest!  Another possible activity is organizing Social Outings to local attractions.  In addition, we have possible “Sunshine Activity”,” which would connect members who might need some support.

There is grave concern, over the Re-entry program and residential treatment activities being established in California, but most noteworthy is the potential impact in San Pedro.  Although sensitive and potentially controversial topics, Prop 47: reclassification felonies as misdemeanors; Prop 57: allowing parole for nonviolent offenders; Prop 107: redirecting nonviolent offenders from prison to county jails.  All these may be well intended, but may have a serious impact on the safety and security of our citizens.  Much validation and inquiry are needed, but be assured the SSCA will report its impact on local resources and safety, without prejudice.

In conclusion, your SSCA is in need for volunteers to support the aforementioned ideas and activities.  Please this is where you chose to reside and make it home.  Together, lets continue to make it the safest and most enjoyable community in Los Angeles.

I urge you to visit the SSCA website at www.southshoresca.org or www.southshoresca.org/membership/join. for information pertaining to these and other timely events

Respectfully,
