President’s Corner 02.17.26

Greetings Neighbors:

So far 2026 has sure been full of controversy, challenges and safety concerns in South Shores.  The bulk of our time has been occupied with the Little Sisters of the Poor property use.  More for that later.

Some of the information contained herein, my be old news and dated.  Although I began writing this message two weeks ago, I only was able to complete now.  Therefore, I apologize, the Little Sisters of the Poor issue have taken on a life of its own.

YOUR SSCA AT WORK:

The Ocean View Plaza, is taking shape.

Coucilman Tim McOssker has kept his word, grass gone, weed abat

ement covering, composite granite down; soon benches and a beautiful spot to enjoy sunsets, conversation and life in South Shores.

Recent winds and rain brought another flurry of Palm tree fronds on Paseo del Mar, scheduled to be cleaned up the week of March 2nd.  Sociables, continue their mission, last meeting was held 02/22. Likewise, so too the

Sidewalk Brigade made another sweep on Cumbre & Mantis, thank you Gordon Thomas.

CRIME &

PUNISHMENT:

We have been somewhat lucky, since the hiring of Secure America Protection Services the slowdown in crime continues.  “If you see something say something”. For information purposes Secure America Protection Services, can be reached at 833-483-9567, or secureamericaprotection@gmail.com

I encourage ALL South Shores residents; members and non-members alike to visit the SSCA website for very informative YouTube videos prepared by our board member Mike Naylor.

Safety, comments, or recommendations can be sent to:

bob@cyberwatch22.orgpresident@southshoresca.orgwww.southshoresca.org

Recently a false alarm incident by a neighbor, can substantiate the importance of Secure America Protection Services.  Workers were mis-identified as potential burglars, a good and resourceful neighbor called both Secure America Protection Services and LAPD.  The security patrol responded within 5 minutes; LAPD responded 48 minutes later.  This is not in anyway a condemnation of our beloved and respected LAPD, but rather a “shout out” to the Security Service.

25th & WESTERN: Nothing new to report.

TUNNEL TO NOWHERE:

Drilling and exploration continue.  Please, be cautious while driving on Western, these workers are in “harm’s way”.  I imagine many have families who anticipate their returning home for dinner.

LITTLE SISTERS OF THE POOR:

Wow, is this a tough subject to explain and write about.

The organization that was running this facility, on an interim basis is gone as of 02/28).

Fred Brown Recovery Services, Inc. (FBRS) has submitted an application to Sacramento for public bond money, to purchase and run a new huge facility on the Little Sisters of the Poor property.  FBRS, currently runs several homes in San Pedro that house “justice-involved, unhoused residents.”   One can only wonder if an impact assessment has been conducted comparing outcomes of small (5-12) residents vs. large (150-200) residents, safety, or community integration for residential vs. institutional models.

The South Shores Community Association supports compassionate care for individuals in recovery and those experiencing mental health challenges.  At this stage, our focus is on transparency, public process regarding FBRS Serenity Recovery Campus and understanding of ALL potential risks and community impacts.  Community input is an essential component for any future proposal.

Any future proposal should involve multiple reviewing agencies and public processes, during which community input is an essential component.  A project of this size and impact warrants careful review, unemotional and open dialogue.

Recently, hundreds of letters have been sent to Marties Perez, requesting the “grant application” be denied.  Copies of these requests have been sent to various neighborhood Councils and Chambers alerting them of various concerns for neighborhood safety.

In addition, the offices of Supervisor Hahn and Councilman McOsker have likewise been alerted.

Also, Councilmember McOsker has submitted a motion 02/25/2026 requesting a “…report outlining the land use regulatory controls that would apply, or could be made applicable, to any proposal submitted for the expansion or development of the property located at 2100 S. Western Avenue in San Pedro as transitional housing, inpatient and outpatient mental health services…”

The GOAL in this month’s Presidents Corner, is to communicate status.  We are informing and seeking facts, truthful unbiased and unemotional answers.

WANTED:

The 2026 Membership campaign is off and running.  Board member Mike Naylor has been knocking on doors, soliciting new members and volunteers to serve as “block captains”.  As of today, Mike’s campaign has been successful in his efforts to attract both new members and block captains.
