President’s Corner 09.14.25

Greetings Neighbors:

BIG thank you for all those who chose to attend the Annual SSCA Reception.

Having reverted back to the Social Only format was an outstanding success.  This format enabled LA Supervisor Janice Hahn, Councilman Tim McOsker and LAPD Captain Brent McGuyre to mingle amongst our neighbors enjoy the food, beautiful venue at the Elks Lodge and music by the “Rusty Nails”.  Comments were overwhelming in favor of retaining this format for future SSCA social receptions.

As summer is coming to a rapid close, students are back in school, vacations are over, Halloween parties and plans in the work, and holidays quickly approaching; we must reflect on the events of this past week.

From the horrible stabbing of Iryna Zarutska on a North Carolina train, the assassination of Charlie Kirk in Utah– to memories of the 9/11– we need to come together as neighbors, families, friends and Americans.  A person’s character should not be defined by politics, religion, color of their skin, ancestry, or team they root for, but rather what is in their heart.  Hopefully, the SSCA social reception is the beginning of a process to know one another, respect one another, listen to one another.  At the very least, friendly banter, forgiveness, listening to one another without judgement – was and should be the way to a better neighborhood, city, county, state, nation and world.

The Clearwater project has been halted. Bones have been discovered at the Royal Palm site.  The origin has not yet been definitively determined.  How to successfully remove the “tunnel borer” equipment is still yet to be finalized.  A video conference is scheduled for Wednesday 09.17.2050.  Please visit the SSCA website for information for additional information, as it is received.

  • Complaints of E-Bikes perceived misuse and endangerment continue.
  • Peacock complaints have subsided; however, we are still waiting for a ruling by the San Pedro Neighborhood Council, about as to what or can be done humanely and legally.

So many good things are happening in South Shores.

  • The Sociables next meeting is Sunday September 28th.
  • The SSCA Annual Business Meeting, has been tentatively scheduled for Tuesday March 10th.
  • CERT training begins tonight (September 16th) at LAPD Harbor Division.  CyberWatch continues to grow and play a major part in crime detection and prevention in South Shores.
  • Welcome Wagon under the leadership of Joanne and Ed Storti continues delivering welcome gifts to our new neighbors.
  • The Sidewalk Brigade has set its sights to clean-up the intersection of Cumbre and Mantis.
  • The formation of a Sunshine Committee (to assist neighbors in their grieving, or wellness process), needs more volunteer.  Please consider this meaningful outreach.
  • SB 79 continues to go through amendments, revisions and arguments and therefore, is still in debate.  However, Herculean efforts of United Neighbors; Maria, Cindy, Jeff and Marc; as well as South Shore residents’ persistent letter writing must continue.

As always, new ideas and volunteers are needed to implement and support existing activities.  We constantly seek new members who possess energy, new ideas and willingness to roll up their sleeves and participate or lead.

I feel a little bit like Mrs. Lincoln, the annual party was GREAT, but my wife Jo-Ann fell and broke her left/arm hand at the reception Sunday.  Please view the accompanying pictures to see the fun, Councilman McOsker playing the tambourine and other members of South Shores.

Remember, South Shores is where you chose to reside and make it home.  Together, lets continue to make it the safest and most enjoyable and friendly community in Los Angeles.

I urge you to visit the SSCA website at www.southshoresca.org or www.southshoresca.org/membership/join. for information pertaining to these and other timely events.

Respectfully,

Richard F. Scandaliato
