President’s Corner 08.19.25

Greetings Neighbors:

I hope all Members and neighbors are enjoying their summer.  Time goes far too quickly, LA Unified is back in session, summer is quickly coming to an end, Labor Day is next Monday, September 1st.

Your SSCA is awaiting its Annual Reception at the Elks Lodge, Sunday September 14th from 2pm – 5pm.  PLEASE, acknowledge your intentions to attend ASAP (through our website or email) so that sufficient refreshments will be available.  This year, our reception is reverting to the format of the past.  FOOD, FUN. MUSIC, ENJOYMENT and SOCIALIZING, just on old fashion get together.

As many of you are aware, construction of the Clearwater project has been halted, speculation and rumors are plentiful.  Until there is an any official word, I decline to speculate.

E-Bikes have become the subject of emails, texts, phone calls and conversations.  The impending danger that exists with reckless and invasive behavior is real, not only to drivers, but to pedestrians and vehicular traffic as well.  Utilizing the recently installed speed humps as launching pads, speeding, not wearing proper safety gear, running stop signs and signal lights, etc. poses a danger to all. Someone needs to be the “parent in the room” to educate our youth in safe and responsible operation.  Riding said bikes on Western Avenue, zooming through red lights or stop signs, does not qualify as safe, or responsible.

On a controversial subject that has come under scrutiny lately are Peacocks.   Many neighbors have described almost “hair raising” events of numerous peacocks in their yards, excrements on laws, sidewalks, roofs, cars, otherwise eating vegetation and loud taunting squeals in early morning hours.  To be completely honest, there have been an equal number of residents who are in favor of letting peacocks roam the neighborhood.  It appears that you either love peacocks, or hate them.  The best advice is NOT to feed them.  In either event the SSCA will support the ruling of the San Pedro Neighborhood Council in their ruling on this issue.

Good news the National Night Out (NNO), hosted and planned by Brain Ward and  family, by all accounts was an outstanding success.  Our Los Angeles Fire Department had a variety of vehicles available for our children to inspect, explore and hopefully instill a desire to be part of one of the GREATEST vocations.

Not to be forgotten is the decision and support of Mayor Karen Bass; as well as, Councilman Tim McOsker in opposing SB 79.  This opposition is also support of the outstanding efforts, contributions and tenacity of United Neighbors, Maria, Cindy, Jeff and Marc.  Thank you all who took the time to write and support opposing SB 79.

The formation of a Sunshine Committee (to assist neighbors in their grieving, or wellness process), remains a priority, eagerly awaiting volunteers.  The next focus of the Sidewalk Brigade is the clean-up at the intersection of Cumbre and Mantis.  The Sociables continues to flourish at the helm of Anita Mannila.  The efforts of Ed and Joann Storti as the official South Shores “welcome wagon” continues as more and more families move into our gorgeous South Shores.  Bob Genest efforts and accomplishments with CyberWatcher’s continues to grow and add a certain amount of safety awareness to South Shores.

In conclusion, your SSCA is in need for volunteers to support the aforementioned ideas and activities.  We constantly are seeking new members who possess energy, new ideas and willingness to roll up their sleeves and participate or lead.
