United Neighbors- information

Hi All,

As we prepare to face new challenges this year, we wanted to send links to some articles you might not have seen.

One is an article that explains the lawsuit recently filed by YIMBY law and Californians for Homeownership ( funded by California Association of Realtors) against the City of Los Angeles.  The lawsuit plaintiffs claim that the city can not reach its state housing mandate through the new Housing Element because it did not change the underlying zoning of neighborhoods ( single family) but rather uses incentives for developers (in the CHIP program ) to get more housing built.  https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2025-02-14/la-housing-plan-lawsuit   They claim this violates state law.

As you can see by this lawsuit and by the complaints made by groups clamoring for more density in single family neighborhoods, this is an ongoing fight.  It is obvious these groups will not wait to see how all our new rules and regulations will contribute to getting new housing.  In fact, they just want to change -single family zoning.  That’s their goal.

It is groups like this with lots of money and clout that are always fighting cities. Our council members are being pressured by them and groups like them. That is why we all need to stick together as a large group and always stay in contact with our council members because they need to know where we stand.

Where do we stand? We are not just out to protect our single family neighborhoods, but we also want good planning that will make LA a livable city for all, not just a cash cow for investors.

We have a meeting with senior Planning staff at the end of the month. We want our group to stay in touch with them.

The next article is the first we have seen that expresses a view not held by LA Times.

Finally, Stay strong as we move forward.   We must all stay engaged.  Thanks to all of you that lead your individual community groups.  It’s by knowing what is going on that we can move forward effectively.

We are waiting for the amendments to SB 79 being introduced by Scott Wiener that we will all need to get  involved with.

Onward.

Best,
Maria, Cindy, Jeff, Marc
